Wildlife this Month - Dec
HedgehogOur hedgehogs have been very active recently and we see them most evenings foraging. They are taking advantage of the mild weather to feed well before hibernation.

Hedgehogs are fabulous little mammals with lovely faces. They eat worms and slugs and so are classed as friends of the gardener.

They will hibernate, probably in December, and reappear in the Spring. In previous years we have heard them snoring from the depths of the bonfire pile so beware if you have a bonfire area at home. Always give it a good rake or poke to make sure it is not occupied before setting light. hoghouse from wildlifeworld.co.ukIf you have hedgehogs please don't be persuaded to put out bread and milk. Milk is nature's laxative and will make them very ill, particularly young ones. They do love meat, such as cat food, but this can attract rats and foxes so again be vigilant. To watch a family is a delight, the little ones tear about like gremlins!

We have put out two houses which we will watch with interest.

We are less excited by the return of Mr Mole. MoleNow that all the tents and tourers have gone he has returned to the camping field. Still, live and let the 'velvet coated gentleman' live.
